Restauranteur and native Houstonian Benjy Levit, the owner of benjy’s in Rice Village and co-owner of Local Foods, brings this modern American bistro to the Washington corridor. The Classic is a comfortable neighborhood joint serving elevated diner food with international touches.
The Look and Vibe
The Classic features an open airy dining room partitioned by half walls, booths and banquettes, and differing ceiling heights with oversized globe lighting. An open kitchen with bar seating and an attractive bar area round out the look. The décor easily and comfortably transitions from brunch to lunch to evening dining.
Popular lunch options include rotisserie chicken (brined for 24 hours), classic burger, classic melt, and any of the 5 salads on offer. We started with crispy brussels sprouts, followed by the classic chicken, cobb, and grilled salmon salads, and with a side of the best French fries around. Someone slipped that it was my birthday, so we were gifted with Benjy’s mom’s chocolate cake and soft serve pumpkin ice cream – totally delightful.
Evening diners are gravitating toward the local catch, steak, pasta, brown sugar salmon, and porterhouse pork chop. Back at The Classic for an evening meal, our group of 3 shared the Israeli sampler starter, followed by the spaghetti Napolitan, brown sugar salmon, and the classic burger for dinner.
The Classic’s beverage program includes unique cocktails such as a passionfruit margarita and gin & juice made with lemon, simple syrup and cold-pressed carrot juice. The drinks menu also offers three-ingredient cocktails, new classic cocktails, wines by the glass and bottle, and a handful of beers.
- The Classic is in an ideal location for a Memorial Park or Buffalo Bayou Park post work out brunch or lunch. Its central location is also great if you’re meeting friends from different areas of town.
- The restaurant also has a semi-private dining room, rooftop dining space or patio seating.
- Check out the long wall mural which depicts the Buffalo Bayou area around 1910.
- Dine here on your birthday and you’re likely to receive a piece of Benjy’s mom’s birthday cake.
