It’s important to remember as we dust off our holiday decorations to adorn our homes for another season that domestic abuse never takes a holiday. This year we can all do something to support survivors by hugging our families a little tighter, and giving to the Houston Area Women’s Center Holiday Gift Express December 10.
“The Holiday Gift Express event is an annual tradition we look forward here at the Women’s Center,” says Chau Nguyen, Chief Marketing Officer for the HAWC. “Clients will be invited to our office — which we transform into a mini-toy store — to select gifts for their children. The children also get to choose something for their parent/guardian! It is important for the kids to feel they have the power to do something positive for those that take care of them.”
The event averages 800 kids and their parents or guardians. Sadly this year intimate partner violence rates are up. The center averaged 35,000-40,000 calls for help a year.
“Our shelter beds are full every night,” says Chau. “The job of protecting women and children never ends. We have shelter locations in Houston, Ft. Bend, Humble and some clients we put up in motels. We even work through a program called Project 180 to get people out of sex trafficking. The Holiday Gift Express is a special time of year for our clients to regain a sense of control and happiness.”
The Center asks donors for $25 gift cards for teen and adult clients. This year Reliant is contributing $5,000 towards the HAWC’s gift card needs and is asking the community to match their gift. You can download the HAWC client’s wish list here. We love the idea of hosting a gift card drive in our neighborhoods or making a gift using their online form.
Volunteers are encouraged to come help the day of the gift distribution and you and your girls can truly get into the Christmas spirit by signing up here.
